Luke & the Wild Grapes

After graduating from a University in the United States, Luke –our winemaker and co-owner– went straight to work at a winery. Little did he know that his first job would transform into a life long passion enabling him to work commercially in 5 different states for several notable wineries and cider houses. Luke’s main task as a journeyman was to surround himself with the most astute mentors. This such process has given him the tools and knowledge to enable him to now follow his own path and form his own opinions on what he thinks wine should and shouldn’t be.

Amongst his major accomplishments was his work producing quality hard cider. His last major project involved working with Justin Osbourne at Loon Juice in Rochester, MN. He was a part of a small team that helped the company grow and expand into one the Premier hard cider producers in the Midwest. Luke and his family finally moved to Portugal 3 years ago and have found a perfect place to start their adventure.

His newest passion is natural wines. He wants to let the wine do what it wants and take its natural progression throughout the whole process. Sometimes it shouldn’t be all about what a winemaker does to the wine, it should be the other way around.

Luke feels that every well crafted wine starts and ends in the vineyard. He feels he was super lucky with this vintage as he was able to procure healthy grapes from respected vineyard owners in and around Cadaval. He can be found quietly working in the cellar chasing his children around or working on his own vineyard renovation project.

Mother Joana

In life we have to find ourselves being able to assimilate and wear as many hats as possible. Joana is the strongest pillar of our company. She leads the charge as she manages our business from top to bottom, left to right and has her hand in everything we do. She enjoys using her art and design background to help organize and create all of our visual content, including the bottle labels.

Daughters of Madness

Our winery oficially opened in the spring of 2019 after carefully choosing a setting that best represented us. After 14 years of working in the wine industry, we felt it was time for our family to emabark in the world of wine on our own. We wanted to create natural products that have very little outside influence. Our product are true examples of hard work, terroir, and originality.

Daughters Of Madness winery, family owned, set in the quaint countryside of the west region of Portugal. We craft palate friendly, small lots of artisan products made from 100 percent high quality Portuguese fruit. We started our winery not only to show the world our passion, but also to instill into our children the value and importance of nature and how to be responsible stewards of the land.

Nature is our teacher.
